What happens in Alexander lessons?

Normally people come to Alexander lessons to deal with some kind of problem.

Unlike many other forms of therapy, the teacher will not go directly to the problem.

What the teacher will be focusing on, and asking you to focus on is the way in which you coordinate your body in standing, sitting, walking and any other activities you may be involved in.

You will also be looking at how your thinking and feeling affect your coordination.

The reason we proceed in this way is because we assume that the way people use themselves affects the way they function.

For example a bad back can be caused by the way you sit, stand walk and bend over a computer.

Change the way you do these things and you give your back a chance to heal itself without the need for manipulations, massage or other therapies that deal more directly with the area of pain.

Alexander teachers training has given them considerable skill in the use of their hands in very subtly guiding their students out of a pattern of tightness and collapse towards posture and movement which is easier, lighter and more coordinated.

Besides working with you in the upright position, you will probably also do some lying down work, during which allows the teacher to help you undo tension and holding of which you are completely unaware of, and which you take with you even into your most relaxed moments.

What sort of clothing should I wear?

The Alexander work is carried out with the student fully clothed. You should wear clothing that is not restrictive. Short or tight skirts are not suitable for the table work.

How many lessons will I need?

There is no definite answer to this question.

Traditionally 30 lessons are recommended.

Frequently after one or five lessons symptoms can be greatly reduced and students begin to have the awareness to change dysfunctional habits, but it is important to continue with more lessons to reinforce a change of movement habits.

As with learning any new skill, it is useful to have the first lessons close together.

Many people find the Alexander work an essential aspect of their personal development and may continue lessons over a longer time.

People such as singers, performing artists or horse riders who are coming to the Alexander technique to develop finer coordination may continue lessons over a number of years.
