Jenny Thirtle, Assistant Director of The School for F.M. Alexander Studies, began her career studying clarinet at Wellington Polytechnic NZ. She then went on to study towards a Bachelor of Music (performance) in singing, at Victoria University (Wellington) before joining The National Opera of New Zealand as a soloist. In 1984 she won a major study grant and went to London. During her time in London, Jenny studied singing with David Harper, worked with various other voice coaches and studied the Alexander Technique for use with her singing. At the same time she continued her professional career as a soloist and had a successful practice teaching singing in Birmingham. Increasingly Jenny saw the importance of the Alexander Technique to the development of her own singing. This led her to commence a three-year full-time Alexander teacher-training course in 1994. Since completing the Alexander Teacher Training course in 1996, Jenny has run workshops and master classes for Musicians and The Alexander Technique at the Melba Conservatorium, Monash University Music Department, The Suzuki Music Association, CAE, Wesley College and Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. At the present time, Jenny is teaching the Alexander Technique as an elective subject for the Bachelor of Music courses at the Melba Conservatorium and the Victorian College of the Arts. These courses are for all instrumentalists and vocalists. Jenny has been teaching at The School for FM Alexander Studies teacher training school since 2003. As part of her work at the school, she runs groups and master classes for the voice day. Jenny is available to run groups, master classes and for private lessons.
