Open to Alexander technique teachers only

My name is Nili Bassan, an Alexander technique teacher, an acupuncturist and a Qi Gong master.

I started my training of the Alexander Technique more than 40 years ago with Mr. Macdonald, when Mr. Scott was his co-teacher. Being the top of my class, I was privileged to assist Mr. Scott for the first year when he opened his school.

During the first year of my training, I had Hypothyroid and looked for cure. Neither traditional nor alternative medicine had effect on my condition, until I tried Acupuncture. Trying to understand how these needles helped, I started to learn Acupuncture as well.
Acupuncture broadened my understanding of the A.T. Through the balance between Yin and Yang I became aware of the balance between my left and right side, front and back, up and down within my own body. The duality of the opposition and the harmony between these two forces taught me to work likewise with my students. The relation between the teacher and the student’s back- using opposition, or the force that we use in our hands in relation to the ability of the student to release, these are small examples of the same principles, Chinese and A.T., east and west, that helped  me  understand more deeply how I can improve  my  work.

In acupuncture, each point in the body is characterized by influencing a specific physical and emotional symptom. The physical and mental influences of specific points in the head, neck and back were eye opening to me in regards to “let the neck be free to let the head go forward and up to lengthen and widen the back”. All of it gave new deeper and wider meaning to the process of Alexander Technique teaching.

More than 20 years ago, after practicing Tai Chi for years I met Chinese Grand Master Jiu Lee Peng who taught me Qi Gong.

The consistent practice of Qi Gong created in me a deep understanding of the connections in the body. Long and limited in movements, the exercises forced me to inhibit and direct, to discover the real meaning of freeing the neck, to work out the delicate balance of the head on top of the neck in a way that will coordinate the breathing as well.

I gained a knowledge that comes only through practice and could be applied in my teaching. With much clearer vision, I could understand my students, physically and mentally different and better than before.  It helped me to correct them more accurately and more profoundly and to teach them how to make the A.T. their true way of life. People who learned with other teacher, who practice only A.T, say that the difference is significant.

The combination of Alexander technique, acupuncture and Qi Gong proved to be fruitful and important, both for the teacher and for the pupil. I now try to pass the essentials of these techniques wherever I teach. I invite you to take part in the workshop of “East and west: How to improve your teaching by looking through the other side of the coin”.  In this workshop we’ll learn some eastern perspectives and practice some Qi Gong exercises in order to improve your teaching of the A.T.  I encourage you to come and experience new exciting worlds, that will open your eyes in your daily work.
