“Be an open channel for your chi” was the instruction my first Chinese Tai Chi teacher used to repeat over and over again, and I now see it as fundamental to a deep understanding of the full potential of the Alexander Technique. I've often felt reading FM Alexander's books that there is a new sensibility trying to break through a nineteenth century rationalistic, materialistic, philosophical framework. Our greater familiarity with eastern concepts including Yoga and mindfulness meditation may perhaps allow us to bring that new sensibility out more clearly. We will talk about this in the context of eastern descriptions of "energy" as a well established language for describing subjective experiences (and consider also FM's use of the terms "vital energy" and "perfecting the self-consciousness of the vital essence" in MSI). We will also explore some practical demonstrations of how basic Alexander practices such as monkey and Hands on Back of Chair show you how to open to the connection with the ground to feel energised support through the whole spine and an open connection with the world around you. Going from the letter of procedural practices to the spirit behind them to reveal greater depth when used this way.” John Nicholls
